Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of India's population. Agriculture contributes to nearly one third of India GDP. Some of the challenges agriculture faces are old, some are new. Government must give agriculture the same importance as industries. If the proper care won't be taken, the words like "small farmer" will become a history.

A study by a premier social sciences research institute reinforces what policymakers and media have been talking about the past few years—that India is going through a deep agrarian crisis. The Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), based in Delhi, found that given an option majority of farmers in the country would prefer to take up some other work. Poor income, bleak future and stress are the main reasons why they want to give up farming. Around 18 per cent of respondents surveyed said it was because of family pressure that they are continuing with farming. The CSDS study report, “State of Indian Farmers”, was released in Delhi on Tuesday.

Why they want to give up farming. The survey of 5,000 farm households across 18 states says that 76 per cent farmers would prefer to do some work other than farming. Sixty-one per cent of these farmers would prefer to be employed in cities because of better education, health and employment avenues there. A high percentage of farmers complained of repeated losses; 70 per cent of respondents said their crops were destroyed because of unseasonal rains, drought, floods and pest.

Electricity is yet another issue, though Govt is giving free of cost they don't mind where they get food from. Everyone should think before eating How and from where is has grown? How much time a farmer must have spent in producing it, How much effort he must have put in?

India is a country that has the capacity to produce three crops season in a year still suicide cases are high in farmers.

And then they can consider issues which affect farmers more as well as their production, then we can consider the biggest issues like:

1. Making the farmers their strength themselves
• Making farmers educate or knowing all the latest technologies and techniques to make the process simple and fast.
• Educating them and making them aware about all the issues and solving the small ones at their end.
• Making them aware of marketing their product or being smart enough to get fooled by the cheaters.
• Converting Unorganized agriculture process to organized one through following the correct process.
• Making them aware of Middlemen and economic exploitation of which don't allow them to get the best price for their production.
• Making them aware of government programs and let them reach to small farmers.
• Making them aware of crop rotation

2. Need for introducing efficient methods The agriculture sector is much more advanced in other countries than India. We are still not using many efficient methods which will reduce farms effort as well as time. So there is need to make use of agricultural implements. All these can be achieved with the help of Govt, not by the farmer alone.

3. Need for better water management Educate them about the water requirement of the crop. Farmer's don't have the awareness of irrigating the crop still he is practicing the Traditional method. Usage of water efficient technologies should be transferred from the concerned department to better utilization of water. Sustainable intensification requires smarter, precision technologies for irrigation, and farming practices that use ecosystem approaches to conserve water Water is becoming a less reliable resource in the already unpredictable business of farming. To survive more frequent droughts and weather extremes, farmers need to strategize that can help reduce water use while maintaining income and food production.

4. Alternate source of income for farmers He should get enough exposure to go for other Agri-based business such as cattle farming, Goat and sheep rearing, fish farming, mushroom cultivation, and many farm business. Which will give him a source of income that can help to improve his livelihood? Govt should encourage farmers to do so.

5. Need for risk management Policies and framework should be strict and ensure the timely delivery of help when a farmer needs it. Disbursement of loans, subsidies, crop insurance, etc. Low-interest rates will make them repay their loans.

One of the recent Survey findings:
• 70 per cent of farmers never heard about direct cash transfer
• Only 19 want subsidies to continue as it is
• Only 27 per cent have heard about the land acquisition law
• 83 per cent farmers clueless about foreign direct investment (FDI)
• 70 per cent farmers never contacted any Kisan call centres
• 47 per cent farmers say that overall condition of farmers in the country is bad

If the government will start solving "How to prevent farmer’s suicide?" rather than "How to solve agriculture problem in India?" then we might be able to solve the issues slowly.

If this condition prevails, no one can save the Indian farmers and Agriculture. First, we should value them. After the Manufacturing and service sectors came in picture we forgot our tradition.

Saving our farmers is not just saving their lives, it means saving our Agriculture, our Indian tradition and thereby saving our kids future.
